This body of work has been inspired by the diaries and journals of early naturalist/explorers, such as Maria Sibylla Merian, Charles Darwin and Edmund Goss. I share with them an awe for the diversity and richness of the earths flora and fauna and the desire to understand its order and beauty.
I bring together text and images pertaining to the natural world as an artist, not a scientist, but my ideas have been informed by such concrete wonders as the metamorphosis of caterpillars and the importance of earthworms to the health of the planet, as well as theoretical concepts such as Darwins theory of evolution. I use my art as a way of exploring the past, raising issues about what forms life will take in the future and what will survive in the light of extinction, environmental destruction and bio-engineering. |
